Fiat ad Instar (‘let it be done’) is where I publish and collect my longer essays, including some that don’t have another obvious home.

I’m Miles Pattenden, a historian and writer. I write about religion, culture and Europe, often with some history involved, and occasionally about other things that seem to invite comment.

I’m particularly interested in the Catholic Church and the papacy, the relationship between religion and politics, and the ways in which the past gets used—and misused—to explain the present. But this isn’t intended to be a newsletter solely about Catholicism, or solely about history.

I also write for newspapers, magazines and other publications, and have written and edited several books on the history of the papacy and Catholic Europe. You can find more of my work at milespattenden.com.
